Scope and Limitations
This dataset covers the thread designation, major thread OD, pitch, taper, seat geometry, seal location, and known-lookalike fields for 17 common hydraulic connector families used in mobile equipment, industrial machines, and process hydraulics. It is an identification aid — not proof of interchangeability, pressure-rating selection, or assembly specification.
This dataset does not cover: pressure ratings, torque values, material compatibility, hose selection, crimp specifications, assembly procedures, or manufacturing tolerances. It does not cover ISO 8434-6 60° cone size rows, quick-coupler profiles, or exact SAE J518 flange sizing beyond family-routing rules.
A dataset match — where all published discriminating fields agree with one record — is described as confirmed in the original dataset methodology. A confirmed match means the identification is internally consistent with the published dimensional record. It does not mean the assembly is safe to use, compatible with the mating component, or within its pressure rating. The fitting and equipment manufacturer specification is always the governing reference.
Note on new-design guidance: SAE J1926/2 and ISO/TC 131/SC 4 direct new hydraulic threaded-port designs to ISO 6149 (metric O-ring port) rather than SAE ORB or ISO 9974. ISO 8434-3 states metric tubing is preferred for new ORFS designs. ISO 8434-1 states elastomeric-seal connectors are preferred where permitted. These new-design preferences are documented in the standards register but are not identification guidance for existing assemblies.
How to Use This Data
- 1. Measure the thread designation. Use a thread pitch gauge for TPI (threads per inch) and a micrometer or caliper for the major thread OD. Record both.
- 2. Identify the thread system. Is it UN/UNF inch, 60° inch pipe (NPT), 55° BSP pipe, or ISO metric? The thread form angle distinguishes inch-UNF (60°) from BSP (55°) and from metric (60°). A 55° form indicates BSPP or BSPT; a tapered profile with that form indicates BSPT.
- 3. Confirm the sealing geometry. Thread designation alone is not sufficient for families that share designations — especially JIC 37°, SAE 45°, SAE ORB, and SAE flareless 24°, which share all 13 UNF thread designations. Examine the seat angle, the presence of an O-ring, and whether a ferrule or cutting ring is present.
- 4. Match to this table. Find the row where thread designation, major OD, pitch, and seat geometry all agree. A match on thread alone is not confirmation.
- 5. Note the confidence ceiling. Each family section lists what constitutes a confirmed vs probable match. If a field is missing or ambiguous, the tool cannot resolve the family — confirm at the machine or with the equipment manufacturer.

SAE Code 61 and Code 62 Flanges (SAE J518)
SAE Code 61 and Code 62 4-bolt flange connections are governed by SAE J518. This dataset includes family-routing rules for both flange codes but does not publish exact flange head or bolt-hole dimensions, which require a verified SAE J518 dimensional table. Both codes use an O-ring face seal between the flange head and a flat port face.
Source: SAE J518 (official standard record). Dataset v1.1.0 — routing rules only; not an exact size reproduction.

Dataset README — scope, verification tiers, SHA-256 checksums
Dataset version: 1.1.0. Publisher: Memphis Hydraulic Hose Repair Research. Verified: July 29, 2026. 122 records are directly verified against official standards-issuer records (★); 35 records are retained from official manufacturer technical tables with stated limitations (●).
Verification Tiers
Each size record carries one of two verification tiers sourced from the dataset README:
- ★
- Exact field row and family semantics read from an official standards-issuer page or official manufacturer technical table; current standard identity and status checked where applicable. 122 records carry this tier.
- ●
- Official manufacturer-published row retained with a stated limitation; exact consensus-standard membership is not asserted. 35 records carry this tier (JIS BSPP 30°, Komatsu 30° metric, DIN 24° Light, DIN 24° Heavy).

Frequently Asked Questions
- How do I tell a JIC 37° fitting apart from a SAE 45° fitting by eye?
- Six dash sizes share identical thread designations and pitches (−02 through −05, −08, and −10). The only field discriminator is the seat angle: 37° on JIC connectors and 45° on SAE J512 connectors. Use a thread protractor or seat-angle gauge — visual estimation from the flare alone is not reliable.
- Are JIC 37° and SAE 45° fittings interchangeable where they share the same thread?
- No. A matching thread designation does not confirm interchangeability. The sealing geometry differs (37° vs 45° flare), and mixing the two can result in a leaking or structurally inadequate joint. Confirm the seat angle at the fitting before assembly.
- What is the difference between NPTF and NPSM threads?
- NPTF (dryseal tapered pipe thread) is tapered — the thread diameter increases along the length, and the pressure-tight seal is made by thread engagement. NPSM (straight mechanical joint pipe thread) is parallel — the same thread diameter along the length, and the seal is made at a 30° mechanical seat or chamfer outside the thread. Both use 60° inch pipe thread form and share nominal thread designations (e.g., 1/2-14), so taper confirmation is required.
- What is the difference between SAE ORB and ORFS connectors?
- SAE O-Ring Boss (ORB) seals with an O-ring beneath the male shoulder compressed into a port chamfer or spotface. O-Ring Face Seal (ORFS) seals with an O-ring in a groove machined into the flat male face, which seats against a flat female face. The thread designations overlap at many nominal sizes but use different pitch series — for example, the ORB −06 uses 9/16-18 and the ORFS −06 uses 11/16-16.
- Can a BSPT male fitting thread into a BSPP female port?
- The thread form (55° Whitworth) is the same, but BSPT is tapered and BSPP is parallel. A tapered male will enter a parallel female port, but the joint is not designed to seal this way. ISO 228-1 explicitly states that pressure-tightness in BSPP is not made on the thread itself — it requires a separate seal method at the face or with a bonded washer. Mixing taper and parallel pipe threads risks a leak or structural failure.
- How do DIN 24° Light and Heavy series differ?
- Both use 24° cone sealing geometry and share many of the same metric thread designations. The distinction is the tube outer diameter for which each series is intended — the Heavy series is designed for higher-pressure applications with heavier tube walls at the same thread size. This dataset records manufacturer-confirmed thread and major-diameter fields; it does not resolve Light vs Heavy from thread designation alone. Tube OD and application pressure must be confirmed at the assembly.
- What is the difference between ISO 6149 and ISO 9974 metric ports?
- Both use ISO metric parallel thread. ISO 6149 seals with an O-ring compressed into a port chamfer (truncated housing) beneath the male shoulder — the O-ring is visible at the shoulder. ISO 9974 seals at the port face using a sealing washer, elastomeric seal, or metal-to-metal face contact — not an O-ring under the shoulder. ISO 6149 is the recommended family for new hydraulic threaded-port designs per SAE J1926/2 and ISO/TC 131/SC 4. A metal-to-metal port face or a washer seat indicates ISO 9974.
